What is SA20?
The SA20 is a Twenty20 cricket tournament held in South Africa. Organised by Cricket South Africa, the tournament follows T20 rules, with innings limited to 20 overs per side and restrictions on the number of fielders. These rules make the game faster and encourage big hitting, leading to more exciting cricket and higher scores.
6 teams compete in the SA20, with a total of $890,000 in prize money available to be won every season. The tournament consists of a double round-robin group stage followed by a playoff to determine the champion.
The competition attracts many international players because it takes place before other major T20 leagues.
SA20 history and major team performances
South Africa’s first T20 league, the T20 Global League, was established in 2017, although it was replaced in 2018 by the Mzansi Super League. However, it only ran for two seasons, as the 2020 and 2021 editions were cancelled due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2022, Cricket South Africa created the SA20, with shares in the tournament split between the governing body, the broadcaster and Sundar Raman. The first edition of the tournament took place in 2023.
So far, the Sunrisers Eastern Cape are the most successful team, having won 3 out of 4 seasons. MI Cape Town won in 2025, while the Eastern Cape won in 2023, 2024 and 2026. Pretoria Capitals finished as runners-up in 2023 and 2026, while Durban’s Super Giants were runners-up in 2024.
SA20 2027 format and schedule
6 teams based across South Africa compete in the SA20, with each tournament consisting of a group stage followed by playoffs. 34 matches will be played in the SA20 2027 season.
Before the tournament gets underway, teams acquire players through an auction. Each team must purchase a squad of 17 players, with a chance to sign up to 5 players prior to the auction. This can consist of 3 international players, 1 South African international and 1 uncapped South African player.
During the group stage, teams play a total of 10 matches, 2 against each opponent. They earn 4 points for a win and 2 for a no result. One additional point is also awarded to a team that wins with a run rate difference that’s 1.25 times greater than their opponent’s.
Following the group stage, the top 4 teams all qualify for the playoffs. The top 2 sides advance to the Qualifier 1 stage of the play-offs while the 3rd and 4th placed sides progress to the Eliminator. The winner of the Qualifier 1 stage automatically reaches the final in Cape Town, while the losing team will then play the winner of the Eliminator match in the Qualifier 2 stage for a chance to join them.
The SA20 2027 season takes place between 17 and 21 February.

There are lots of popular cricket markets available on South African cricket. Some are ideal for beginners, while others are best suited to more experienced bettors.
Ideal SA20 betting markets for beginners
These are the most popular betting markets and are suitable for beginners who are still learning the teams:
Winner (incl. Super Over) - A moneyline bet where you predict the match winners. If the SA20 match ends in a draw, it will be decided by a Super Over.
Team or innings totals - Bet on the over/under line for the total number of runs scored by either team or within a specific innings.
Team with top batter/bowler: Simply pick the team you think will have the highest scoring batter or bowler at the end of the match.
Total fours (over/under): Pick the over or under on how many fours will be scored during the match by both sides.
Total sixes (over/under): Wager on the over or under betting line on how many sixes will be scored during the game.
Most fours and most sixes: Bet on which team will score the most fours or sixes during the match.
Ideal SA20 betting markets for experienced bettors
These betting markets are better suited for experienced bettors who have a better understanding of the game and each team:
Team with highest score at 1st dismissal: This is a prediction on which team will have the highest score at the point of the 1st dismissal.
Player and game props: Player props like player of the match are available, as are selected game props like the coin toss.
Same game multi bets - Combine multiple bets into one to create better odds and a higher potential payout.
Outright: The outright cricket betting market allows you to bet on the eventual winner of the SA20 tournament.

SA20 betting odds and payouts explained
Before you start betting on the SA20, it’s important to understand how odds work and how they impact your potential payouts. Check our guide to odds and change the odds format between fractional, decimal and American to find the one you prefer.
For example, if you’re betting with decimal odds, you simply multiply the odds by your stake to calculate how much you’ll get as a payout. Let’s say you bet $100 on Paarl Royals to win at odds of 1.70. You’ll win a $170 payout, with $70 profit if they win.
For fractional odds, you have to multiply your stake by the numerator (the top number of the fraction) before dividing by the denominator (the bottom number). This tells you your potential profit. For example, if you bet $100 on Joburg Super Kings to win at odds of 3/5, you’d win $60 profit if they won.
With American odds, the odds are displayed with a minus (-) sign if they’re the favourite and a plus (+) sign if they’re the underdog. This changes how you calculate your payout. For example, Sunrisers Eastern Cape to win at -238 tells you that you need to bet $238 to win a $100 profit. Meanwhile, Pretoria Capitals to win at +170 shows that you would win $170 profit from a successful $100 bet.

Betting tips and predictions
Form: The short season means there isn’t a huge amount of matches played during the tournament, but you can still get a good idea of form before you place your bets. Look at the winning margin and net run rate scored in recent matches to assess the relative team strength.
History: The SA20 is a relatively new competition, as it’s only in its 5th season in 2027. As a result, you don’t have a lot of history or head-to-head records to look at when choosing your bets. However, recent history will still show you which teams are most likely to reach the play-offs stage.
Auction results: Before the season, teams build their squad using the auction to sign talent. Early on in the season, consider any major changes to squads and how that may affect the chances of each team.
Pitch conditions: The SA20 features a total of 6 pitches, which are located in different parts of the country and experience different conditions. Consider how high altitude and coastal locations can affect run scoring rates when picking your total run bets. You should also focus on home-field records over league standings, as these can affect match results.
Make the most of the markets: There’s a huge variety of betting markets to choose from on all SA20 games, giving you plenty of opportunity to find value if you know where to look. Don’t just focus on the winner's odds. Look at other bet types, such as totals and player props.
Compare how teams perform during the powerplay and death overs, as these phases often decide close T20 matches.
Choose markets that suit your experience level: New bettors might prefer winner markets while experienced betters opt for handicaps, totals and player markets. Live bettors can analyse momentum shifts during matches, but odds can change quickly as wickets fall and run rates increase.
